God of academics which watch over the Wakanoura Bay

The god of academics, Sugawara no Michizane is enshrined and is one of the three shrines dedicated to the god in Japan along with Dazaifu Tenmangu and Kitano Tenmangu. It was built by Heinouchi Yoshimasa and his son Masanobu, from Negoro of Kishu (present-day Wakayama). Masanobu was the best carpenter who later became the master builder of the public works for the Tokugawa Shogunate. The tower gate is one of the largest with a structure which there is only one space between the pillars. The main hall is registered as an important cultural heritage designated by the national government, and you can see the beautiful colors both inside and outside of the architecture.
